The competition is pretty tough in 2025, with a number of wireless carriers offering more services and features in order to provide its customers with more bang for their buck. Prepaid wireless carriers have been fairly aggressive lately, offering excellent prices on plans, while also bundling in useful perks.
So it makes perfect sense that Google Fi would also come out with some new perks of its own, giving its users more features and tools to make the service worth keeping. While the brand isn’t offering free access to streaming services, or giving away free merch on a weekly basis, it is making its core offerings even better.
Strengthening the service from within
Google is adding more Wi-Fi Auto Connect+ locations to its network, allowing users to get connected to powerful wireless networks when traditional cellular isn’t available, or it’s not in its best form. Google highlights locations that are indoors or areas that experience crowding.
The locations are said to be in the millions at this point, being available at airports, malls, and more locations. The best part is that you don’t need to do anything in order to get this feature to work because your phone will automatically switch over to these wireless networks when needed.
Those that are curious about this feature will see a “W+” symbol on their phones when connected to such a network. In addition, Google Fi will also improve the call quality when connecting with landlines, utilizing “AI-enhanced audio” that will be able to filter out distracting background noises while also enhancing voice clarity.
Furthermore, Google Fi will now enable the ability to make calls, check messages and voicemails from a compatible browser. While you’ll probably have your phone with you at all times, it’ll be nice to be able to hop on a laptop or tablet and get access to the same features.
And the final change that Google is making to Fi is the addition of some AI help within the app itself. While the app is pretty straightforward, Google is injecting some of the areas within the app with AI in order to better clarify charges that you see on your bill. This change will allow you to understand your bill without having to call customer service.
For the most part, not a bad set of changes to Google Fi, especially considering that there aren’t any new price hikes or service fees. Of course, if you’re someone that’s on an older phone that doesn’t run on at least Android 11, you’ll want to change to something newer.
That’s because Google recently announced that advanced features would no longer be supported on older hardware. Those on older devices will have until October 27 in order to make the change. After that date, users will lose out on advanced features like Wi-Fi calling, visual voicemail, VPN and VCN services.
