    Home Tips

While burglary and other property theft may be down overall, data suggest that property crimes spike around Halloween. You might see traditional pranks or new local trends, like stealing expensive decorations.

If you’re worried about these not-so-fun tricks, I’ve got a home security device that’ll help you get some peace of mind, even after spooky season.

Stop Halloween pranks with a floodlight home security camera

A Blink Outdoor 4 Floodlight Cam attached to the side of a home at dusk casts its 700 lumens of light into the yard.

Floodlight cams provide excellent deterrent to casual criminals.

Far more advanced than old-fashioned devices, today’s security cameras are equipped with object recognition and motion-detection lights that won’t turn on at every falling leaf. They also have the latest LED light panels with high-lumen beams that can light up an entire yard.

Those specifications make floodlight cams effective at detecting humans and shining their lights as bright as you want them, enough to scare away any Halloween thieves. Most also come equipped with two-way audio and sirens, so you can take additional measures after receiving a phone alert that the camera detected someone.

Cameras like these also have motion and privacy zones for even more customization. They can only watch what you want, like sections of your yard that have a lot of Halloween decorations.

I have a list of floodlight camera recommendations here, including the ultra-bright Eufy S330 ($250) and the battery-powered, wireless Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight ($240). I’m also a fan of the free AI features on the Google Nest Cam with Floodlight ($270).

If you do choose a wired version, you’ll usually need to wire it into a junction box or make compatible plug-in arrangements.

For even more options, use a pan/tilt cam with clear tracking

A pan/tilt camera can let trespassers know they’re being watched.

Other additions that can keep your home safer for Halloween include a pan/tilt camera that clearly identifies a person and tracks them across the yard. Arlo released a very affordable model this year ($40), while Eufy has a version that works with solar panels ($180). Pranksters are more easily deterred when they can see a camera following them around.

I also recommend a video doorbell if you don’t already have one. They can provide alerts if someone approaches your porch when you aren’t expecting any trick-or-treaters. They’re a great Halloween addition to any home.
