T-Mobile was once a scrappy wireless carrier trying to navigate the cellular waters with juggernauts like AT&T and Verizon. However, the brand would make some interesting changes starting in 2013 with its first Un-carrier event that would eventually go on to change the industry.

Fast-forward a little over a decade and T-Mobile is now one of the largest wireless carriers in the US. It’s no longer the underdog and is now constantly beating rivals like Verizon. And it’s not only the prices and perks the wireless carrier offers that make it one of the best, but also technologies like a reliable 5G network, and new features like satellite communication.

Satellite connectivity has to be one of the more interesting features to arrive in the wireless space, allowing people to stay connected in areas where it wasn’t possible before. While this feature used to be pretty basic, T-Mobile now offers satellite connectivity that can handle SMS, MMS, and even some popular apps as well.

A new way to connect in an emergency

The brand is now taking things even further, making it possible to text 911 services through satellite, ensuring that no matter where you are, you can reach emergency services. Text to 911 is a service that has been around for a little while, making it possible to connect with a call center even if you can’t use your voice.

T-Mobile shares that this service will be open to anyone with a compatible phone. However, you will need to sign up to use the service. But the good news is that there won’t be any charges. This also applies to those using other wireless carriers. T-Mobile hasn’t been shy about opening up its satellite network to users that aren’t on its network.

Those on T-Mobile Go5G Next and Experience Beyond plans will not need to do anything in order to have access to the new Text to 911 service via satellite. Those outside that plan will still be able to access the feature for free, they’ll just need to add in via the T-Mobile website or T-Life app.

If you don’t have a compatible T-Mobile plan, you can always add satellite connectivity for just $10/month. The same applies to customers that aren’t on the T-Mobile network already. Again, you don’t need to pay for the Text to 911 service, regardless if you’re a T-Mobile customer or are enrolled with another carrier.

If you’re in the latter category, just head to the website to add the feature, or call the carrier to gain access. While the connectivity in the US is pretty good, you never know when you’ll be in an area that doesn’t have service. Satellite connectivity can become a lifesaver when you least expect it.
