Switching to Windows 11’s dark mode saves my eyes at night

Most of the time I’m happy with Windows Light mode for my Windows look, but when it gets dark the glaring brightness of Light mode can be a little too much for my eyes. That’s when I like to switch to Windows Dark mode.

Apart from being easier on the eyes in low light conditions, Windows Dark mode conserves my OLED laptop’s battery, and it just plain looks slick with the right apps running in the background. Here’s how to turn it on.

    What to do:

    • From the Start menu navigate to Settings > Personalization > Colors.
    • Now next to “Choose your mode” select Dark.
    • You can also choose Custom. If you choose this mode, you’ll have the option to choose one default Windows mode and a different default app mode.
    • You can also change the “Accent colors” and turn on “Transparency effects” so feel free to experiment with a look you like.

How does Windows look now? If you’re not vibing on it, you can simply reverse the mode by choosing Light again next to “Choose your mode”.

Tip: If you want more of a warming effect in low light conditions you can also activate “Schedule night light” in your PC’s display settings.

Just go to Settings > System > Display > Night light and toggle the switch on next to “Schedule night light”. Then just choose a time when you want the night light to be activated.

That’s all for this Try This. Be sure to subscribe to our PCWorld Try This newsletter if you want more awesome tips and tricks delivered to your inbox each week.
