As the days get shorter and nights get colder, it’s a great time to settle down in a cozy, warm spot with a good book. And if you enjoy reading e-books, this Halloween week provides a fantastic opportunity to stock up on scary stories.

Stuff Your Kindle Days (sometimes also called book blasts) give e-book fans easy opportunities to load up their e-readers with great stories that are temporarily priced at a heavy discount or offered at no cost at all. This week, the Get Spooked event features steals on e-books about werewolves, vampires, wizards and all sorts of eerie ghost stories.

Right now, fans of horror and the paranormal can stock up on electronic versions of their favorite books, and keep those downloaded books forever. These Kindle-stuffing events run throughout the year with alternating genres, so if horror books aren’t your thing, come back in November for romance and LGBT-themed events.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about Stuff Your Kindle Day and how to take advantage of these deals.

What is Stuff Your Kindle Day?

    Tech Tips

    CNET

Stuff Your Kindle Day is a reader-organized digital event where authors and publishers temporarily make hundreds of e-books free or drop them to just $1 (well, 99 cents to be precise). For instance, the current Get Spooked event is hosted by the Indie Author Collective.

The idea is to allow you to discover new indie authors, try a genre you might not normally buy and fill your Kindle (or e-reader app) with zero guilt and little investment.

    What other events are offered?

Stuff Your Kindle Day isn’t just a once-a-year deal. There are themed events happening all year long. Today’s horror fiction event runs through Oct. 30, and then there is a Black Readers Appreciation Event starting Nov. 5 and an LGBT-themed event on Nov. 20.

If you like to plan your reading list in advance, BookBub keeps an updated calendar of events and lists of featured books.

Is this just available for Kindle users?

Anyone can take advantage of Stuff Your Kindle Day. Whether you use a Kindle, Kobo, Nook or just your phone, you can grab these free or discounted books and read them on your preferred device or app.

How to grab these Get Spooked e-book deals

There’s no catch or sign-up required. Just browse the eligible books on the Indie Author Collective site or your preferred retailer, such as Amazon, and download them before the deals expire. Once you’ve purchased or claimed the books, they’re yours to keep forever.

Although the dates for this Stuff Your Kindle Day are listed as Oct. 26-30, the current countdown clock on the Get Spooked event page seems to indicate you’ve got until the end of Friday, Oct. 31 to stock up on your favorite vampire and ghost stories, so fire up that Kindle. Your fall reading list will thank you.
