Despite most people not even being interested in foldable phones, we know that Samsung’s making a big push this year, set to introduce a new tri-fold phone sometime in the next few months. The brand made a major splash with its Galaxy Z Fold 7, so it will be interesting to see what it comes up with next.

While Samsung’s official channels have been pretty quiet about this device, the rumors and leaks surrounding it have been anything but. From what we know so far, it could arrive with a sprawling 10-inch screen, beefy internals, and a titanium frame. We’re also hearing that Samsung could pack the battery into three sections, in order to maximize its power.

    The battery will be critical

The news comes from Galaxy Club, sharing a newly discovered patent which has the battery for a tri-fold device, separated into three sections (via SamMobile). This configuration is necessary in order to maximize the battery life that the device can provide. Plus, if you have the room, it just makes sense to shift the battery around in order to create a more balanced product.

By having the battery in three parts, this will allow Samsung to control the thickness of each part. From what we can gather from the patent, it appears that the smallest battery will reside in the base, which will most likely also house the board, along with other components like the cameras as well.

The other batteries will be laid out in other parts of the display, with the battery size increasing for each extension of the screen. Being able to cram as much battery into this phone will be important, considering that it will have a large screen once unfolded. Many expect this product to come with more than 5,000mAh.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 currently packs 4,400mAh, which is one of the smaller battery sizes to come in a tablet-style foldable phone. While other brands have consistently increased battery sizes or dabbled in new tech, Samsung has been pretty stagnant in this space. It’s unclear why, but if we had to guess, it’s because it did have some battery issue with one of its devices long ago.

While most have forgotten, Samsung no doubt remembers the impact the battery fiasco on its brand and business, and is still moving quite cautiously. Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to find out what it has in store. If it can launch its new tri-fold phone in the US, it will be the first brand to do so.

And while OnePlus and Google are just catching up with its foldable phones, when the new tri-fold phone drops, Samsung will once again be in a league of its own.
