Samsung preps ‘new’ Galaxy AI features for One UI 8.5

Although Samsung is still in the process of rolling out One UI 8 for its flagship phones, the countdown has already started for the next major update scheduled for early next year. One UI 8.5 will be based on Android 16 QPR2, and will also introduce a complete visual overhaul of multiple UI elements.

Separately, we’ve also learned about a handful of new Galaxy AI features that will be incorporated into the upcoming software. New reporting from South Korean media outlet ETNews is offering more credence to those revelations, citing information from “industry sources” (via SamMobile).

Here’s what each of these “new” Galaxy AI features can do, as per the descriptions we spotted last month:

    • Meeting Assist: Get real-time translation of meeting conversations and presentation screens.
    • Touch Assistant: Improve your reading efficiency by processing the text shown on the screen.
    • Social Composer: In social media apps, generate posts based on images you upload. In shopping apps, generate reviews based on your purchases.
    • Smart Clipboard: Get intelligent recommendations for useful functions, such as Correct, Summarize, Translate, Add to favorites, Search, and Open, when you copy content.

If any of these Galaxy AI features sound familiar, it’s because Galaxy devices in China have offered them as part of the Galaxy AI suite since earlier this year.

Won’t be a China exclusive for much longer, thanks to One UI 8.5

Samsung relies on Baidu’s large language model (LLM) Ernie AI rather than Gemini to power Galaxy AI features in China due to local internet regulations. With this in mind, it will be interesting to see if the upcoming Gemini-based version will differ from its Baidu-powered counterpart.

In any case, Galaxy flagship owners across the globe should welcome these inclusions, although Samsung already offers a long list of AI features for users outside China.

These won’t be the only Galaxy AI upgrades coming to One UI 8.5, though. A recent leak dropped hints of an iOS-style AI notification summaries feature in development. Something like this would likely find more takers than any of the niche features we touched on above (except Smart Clipboard and Touch Assistant), so we’ll be keeping an eye out for more info on this front.

As is now common knowledge, Samsung will debut One UI 8.5 with the Galaxy S26 range of smartphones in early 2026. Older devices, including the Galaxy S25 and Z Fold 7/Flip 7 models, should be prioritized for the rollout of One UI 8.5. The first beta could go live by late November, as we recently learned, though there’s still no specific date to mark on your calendars.
