MainGear’s new desktop gaming PC oozes stunning retro chic vibes

Desktop PCs didn’t always look like black refrigerators covered in Christmas lights. They used to look like… well, like regular refrigerators, I suppose. Beige and boring, back in the glory days of the 80s and 90s. We’ve seen case manufacturers embrace this retro look, and now MainGear is joining in with its own fully pre-assembled desktop.

Called the Retro95, it’s an old-school horizontal desktop setup using a rebadged version of the Silverstone FLP01, which can fit modern ATX-standard components. It’s a real treat if you’re old enough to remember this era, with faux floppy drives on the front. The bottom one flips down to reveal an I/O panel (two USB-A ports, one USB-C, headphone jack), and the top one can fit a full 5.25-inch disk drive. A rare sight these days.

    MainGear

MainGear will offer the Retro95 in a variety of configurations starting at $1,599. At that price, you definitely won’t be getting a Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, RTX 5080 graphics card, 96GB of memory, and 8TB of storage… but those are the most high-end parts available. (And sadly there’s no mention of a CD drive, but you can always install one yourself, I suppose.) MainGear says that this is a “limited drop” that starts today. “Once they’re gone, they’re gone,” but we don’t know how many of these desktops will be available and at what price points.

If you want to see more of the FLP01 case in action, be sure to check out PCWorld’s two-hour live build over on YouTube. It’s a hoot.
