We’re less than a month out from the launch of PS5 exclusive Ghost of Yōtei, and I find myself eagerly awaiting the chance to play it. That feeling only got stronger after watching the YouTube video Journey Through The Edge Of Japan that PlayStation Studios released for the game.

It’s a calming, serene video that gives us a better look at Sucker Punch Productions’ rendition of Japan. Ghost of Yōtei already seemed like it was going to be one of the best-looking PS5 games, and this new video only makes me even more hopeful that this is the case.

Ghost of Yotei’s rendition of Hokkaido looks absolutely beautiful

This new ten-minute video got me more hyped than any action-filled trailer

Ghost of Yōtei has received plenty of flashy, action-filled trailers since its reveal last year, but Journey Through The Edge Of Japan isn’t one of those. Instead, it’s more of an ambient video where the camera slowly pans through many of the different areas that players will be able to explore in the game.

A wide range of locales are featured, from serene waterfalls to colorful forests to snowy mountain ranges. It also puts a spotlight on the game’s sound design and soundtrack, featuring a new song from artist Toma Otowa called The North. You might not even be able to tell that Ghost of Yōtei is an action game if this is the only video for it that you watch.

Typically, this kind of promotional video would leave much of an impact on me, but it stands out in Ghost of Yōtei’s case because it’s leaning into the aspect of Ghost of Tsushima’s successor that entices me the most. That aspect is the setting, as it has changed from the southern Japanese island of Tsushima to Ezo, the northernmost island of Japan, now known as Hokkaido.

Five years later, the main thing from Ghost of Tsushima that still sticks with me is its gorgeous world and stunning art direction. I had my qualms with some of its dated gameplay and open-world mission structure, but even in 2025, I sometimes boot the game up just to ride around its rendition of Japan on my horse and take in the beautiful sights around me.

While previous trailers for Ghost of Yōtei suggested that this artistry would carry over into the game’s successor, for some reason, this Journey Through The Edge Of Japan video really affirmed that for me. More than anything else, I just can’t wait to slowly explore its version of Ezo.

That speaks to the fact that action isn’t necessarily always what can sell a game. Sometimes, stunning art direction and a great soundtrack are more than enough.

Ghost of Yōtei has gone gold, and while I haven’t received a pre-release copy of the game, some game industry influencers have hinted that reviews of Ghost of Yōtei will drop before the end of the month. Hopefully, it turns out that the game’s world is actually as stunning as it seems.
