New smart glasses are expected soon from Meta, and Google will have some next year. Now Amazon may be entering the race with display-enabled smart glasses of its own, a possible stepping stone to augmented reality glasses further down the road. The report comes from The Information, via reporters who have a strong track record of correctly spotting emerging headsets and glasses.

According to the latest story, Amazon’s display-enabled glasses could work like updated versions of the Echo Frame audio glasses the company already makes, but with added cameras and a heads-up display.

UploadVR also wrote about the news, noting the Information’s reporting that Amazon is simultaneously working on two models: one for its own drivers to assist with deliveries, and a sleeker version with color display for customers to order.

Smart glasses are becoming a hot new trend in tech, especially now that camera and microphone-enabled glasses are a vehicle for generative AI services. Amazon could be entering a very crowded space with Meta, Google, Samsung, Snap, a host of smaller players, and maybe even Apple.

Amazon already has the tools to make glasses like these work. Besides already making audio glasses, there’s Alexa, smart home services, and a host of music, video and Kindle content the glasses could draw from. Amazon’s also dabbled in wearables including health-tracking wristbands.
