They’re tiny, tenacious and out to ruin your hard work. If you’re not careful, the little bugs in your garden can become a big problem.

We’re not talking about pollinators like busy, buzzy bees and flitting, colorful butterflies. We’re talking about the mites of mass destruction, beetles with bad intentions and amoral aphids hellbent on turning your luscious greenery into their personal pest buffet.

    AI Atlas

Lucky for you, tools like Claude AI, the artificial intelligence model developed by Anthropic and former OpenAI employees, can serve as a secret weapon in the battle of the bugs.

Here’s how to use AI to keep your garden free of unwanted pests with unsavory appetites.

    Know the enemy

Claude is a great research tool and a reliable resource for localizing and identifying your bug and pest challenges in the garden. Claude can generate a list of likely culprits lurking around your tomatoes and petunias and offer custom preventative measures to keep bad bugs out.

Start by giving Claude a breakdown of the plants in your garden, the area in which you live and any environmental or situational factors that might impact results, like how much water you’re using or whether you’re OK with using chemicals that might be toxic to things other than those pesky bugs.

Based on a simple prompt, Claude generated a yearlong pest management plan for a diverse SoCal garden in minutes:

It also gave me a seasonal supply list and tactics for emergency responses in case the garden goes into crisis.

Get ready for battle with expert knowledge

Most, if not all, of what you need to combat unwanted bugs in your garden can be sourced and purchased online, but if you need to gear up and get down to business in the same day, Google Gemini is great at offering local solutions, like garden centers, nurseries and even specialists, that offer services and products created to fight the good garden fight.

Gemini generated a very comprehensive list of suppliers local to the target area, which is a refreshing experience considering how much time and effort big box stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s may be spending to ensure that the average Google search page results for garden centers always feature their locations prominently as sponsored results.

It is a luxury to source the deep expertise of a true garden expert who is active in your area, while skipping the work it takes to go through page after page of advertisements to find them.

    Discover moves and deploy countermeasures

Common garden bugs with greedy appetites may already be getting busy in your bushes, so it’s important to be able to react quickly and effectively against the onslaught. Tools like Gemini can analyze images of the damage done and provide effective long-term and short-term solutions specific to the critter causing your green space distress.

Gemini and Claude can identify patterns in damage, web types, snail trails and stress indicators from photos of your garden and plants, and cross-reference the visual information with a deep well of data and metrics about the exact type of mischievous living things that might be going ham on your hard work.

As always, make sure you’re curious about the results any AI tool generates. These tools are more than capable of telling you a slug is the cause of grimy, irregular bite marks in your bok choy when it’s actually a beetle making your leafy greens its personal buffet.

A good rule of green thumb is to create prompts for the AI tools that leave space for conversation. Let the tools guide you through what might be going on before you go off half cocked and try a remedy that won’t apply.
