We’ve come across innumerable reports about Samsung’s upcoming Android XR headset, known internally as Project Moohan. As with most new tech, this headset’s arrival has been delayed multiple times, though we already got a sense of its functionality earlier this year. While reports suggested that Samsung’s first XR headset would be announced on September 29th, it looks like the wait just got longer.

In an exclusive report citing industry sources, South Korea-based publication ETNews revealed that Samsung’s rival to the Apple Vision Pro will be officially unveiled and released on October 21. Samsung is believed to have postponed the release for quality assurance and “internal marketing strategy coordination,” per ETNews.

We’re also learning that Samsung intends to ship 100,000 units of the Project Moohan XR headset, at least initially, with the device expected to be available through online channels. It remains unclear if Samsung will launch this headset globally or limit its availability to a few markets.

While we don’t have specific details on this XR headset’s price tag, a recent report gave us some preliminary info on this front. Based on these early (and unofficial) reports, it’s clear that the Project Moohan XR headset won’t be light on your wallet. However, since it’s going up against the $3,500 Apple Vision Pro, it was never meant to be affordable.

The ETNews report adds that Samsung will separately sell corrective lenses for its Android XR headset, similar to Apple’s mixed-reality headset.

Samsung’s trifold smartphone will launch later

There’s also some hype for Samsung’s first triple-folding smartphone, which was widely expected to debut later this month. However, ETNews says the foldable will now appear at a separate event, while a “release date” is reportedly set for late October or November.

Among all the hype for Samsung’s new XR headset and the trifold flagship, it’s easy to forget that the company also has its first XR smart glasses, codenamed Haean, in the pipeline. ETNews says these smart glasses will be revealed early next year, presumably alongside the Galaxy S26 series.

This is a market that Meta appears to have made its own, with yesterday’s announcement only bolstering its position. Meanwhile, retail giant Amazon is also expected to join the smart glasses bandwagon soon. Information on Samsung’s Android XR-based smart glasses is relatively scarce right now, though we expect that to change in the coming weeks and months.

For now, all the focus will be firmly on the Project Moohan headset, which is expected to feature a micro OLED screen procured from Samsung Display. The screen will reportedly sport a resolution of 3800ppi (pixels per inch). This, as the site notes, is markedly higher than the Apple Vision Pro’s 3391ppi screen, thus giving Samsung a significant hardware advantage right off the bat.

There’s also going to be 16GB of RAM bundled with the Samsung XR headset, while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 SoC will deal with the performance side of things. As you would expect, Google Gemini will play a crucial role in the headset’s functioning, aided by integrations with multiple Google apps, including Maps.

Samsung has seemingly worked on making its upcoming headset more comfortable to wear by making it lighter than the Vision Pro, which was among the many complaints voiced by customers of Apple’s mixed reality headset. This, combined with a lower price tag, could make some people consider Samsung’s first Android XR headset, provided the company doesn’t limit its availability.
