Wear OS has made a strong comeback in recent years, thanks in large part to the popularity of the Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch. With great look, smooth performance, and polished software, they’ve become some of the best smartwatch options for Android users. Battery life, though, is still a sticking point. While a few brands have figured out how to squeeze out multi-day use, most Wear OS watches still need a daily charge, an annoyance if you’re using them heavily.

A big culprit behind the drain? Watch faces packed with flashy animations, constant data refreshes, or frequent phone syncing. To tackle this, Google is rolling out a new Play Store change aimed at curbing the problem.

The Google Play Store is rolling out a new feature for Wear OS that will display warnings on watch face listings that are known to drain a device’s battery life fast. Android Authority reports that Play Store version 47.7 will now display warnings on watch face app pages if they’re known to drain a lot of power. The goal is to help users decide smarter before installing a new face.

If you’ve tried swapping out your smartwatch face for something new, chances are you’ve hit the usual snags like sluggish performance, awkward design, and a battery that tanks way too quickly.

Stock watch faces stay king for a reason

A lot of these faces just aren’t built to play nicely with your watch’s hardware or software, which is why issues pile up. Some developers do get it right with smooth, battery-friendly designs, but most can’t match the quality of the built-in options. That’s why a lot of people stick with stock faces because they’re reliable and just work.

The Play Store is adding warnings to call out watch faces that drain too much power. This makes it easier to pick battery-friendly options and skip the frustration of a watch that dies too soon.

Most battery-saving tips for smartwatches suggest turning off features, which kind of defeats the point of owning one. A smarter approach is tweaking things that actually fit how you use it, like picking a watch face that won’t kill your battery before the day’s done.
